A Japanese visitor apparently drowned Monday while snorkeling in waters off South Kohala.

South Kohala patrol officers responded to a 2 p.m. report of a possible drowning in waters fronting a resort located on Kaniku Drive, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Arriving officers determined resort personnel had pulled an unconscious male snorkeler from the water and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The 35-year old man, identified as Takashi Nakayama, was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
